Breakouts After a Facial? Here’s What’s Really Going On

If you’ve ever noticed a breakout after a facial, you’re not alone—and I know how frustrating that can feel. You come in for healthier skin, and instead, it feels like things are getting worse before they get better. The good news? In many cases, this is completely normal, and even expected.
Let me explain what’s happening, why it occurs, and how to care for your skin afterward.
Why Breakouts Can Happen After a Facial
Your skin is speeding up its renewal cycle
Many of the treatments I offer at Glow Studio are designed to increase cell turnover. When we exfoliate or use active ingredients (like enzymes, acids, or peels), we’re encouraging your skin to shed buildup and bring fresh cells to the surface. Sometimes, this process brings up congestion that was already forming underneath—what’s known as purging. It’s temporary, and it often means the treatment is working.
New ingredients = an adjustment period
If we introduced new products during your facial, your skin may need time to adjust. Even high-quality, professional-grade ingredients can occasionally trigger a reaction—especially if your skin barrier was compromised before the treatment.
Extractions release what was trapped
If your facial included extractions, it’s possible you’ll see some small blemishes afterward. That’s because we’ve cleared blocked pores, and in doing so, may have stirred up inflammation around that area. It’s not a bad sign—it’s your skin completing the clearing process.
Is It Purging or a Reaction?
Here’s how to tell the difference:
Purging: You’re seeing small whiteheads or breakouts in areas where you usually get them. They come on quickly, then resolve in a week or so.
Reaction: You’re seeing red, itchy, or painful bumps—often in areas you don’t typically break out. If that happens, it may be sensitivity or a sign your skin barrier needs extra support.
Either way, I want to hear about it. Your skin’s response helps me fine-tune your treatment plan.
What You Can Do at Home
✓ Keep things simple.
This is not the time to introduce new actives. Stick to a gentle cleanser, a calming moisturizer, and SPF. I’ll always give you post-facial care tips specific to your skin.
✓ Don’t pick.
I know it’s tempting—but touching or squeezing blemishes will only make things worse.
✓ Cool it down.
Cold compresses or a soothing gel mask can help calm inflammation and reduce redness.
✓ Stay in touch.
If you’re unsure about what your skin is doing, send me a message. I’m here to support you beyond the treatment room.
The Bottom Line
Post-facial breakouts don’t always mean something went wrong. Often, they’re part of the clearing process. Your skin is adjusting, healing, and responding to deeper work—and sometimes, that doesn’t look like a perfect glow right away.
Be patient. Stay consistent. And know that I’m right here with you, every step of your skin journey.
